With the new Quest patch, Kurtrus is not a bad hero. To trigger his hero power, you need to buy any minions and to get the quest rewards, usually you need to do the same. What happens is that you get good momentum because of the hero power. Even if your board makes no sense, you still win fights and get the reward, which gives you even more momentum. At that point, you can start leveling early and look for a build that counters your opponents.
